I have to say I was a lot happier before I learnt about the existence of the Large Hadron Collider. It's a massive particle accelerator which apparently is either going to create EPIC SCIENCE or bring about the end of the world.

Like some kind of bad sci-fi disaster movie, this is ultimately a quest for power. It is an attempt to create an infinite energy source that will ensure the continuing prosperity of the human race after we've drained the planet of its fossil fuels. It could also however vaporise the planet within seconds of the machine being switched on.

Before you say anything, yes I am talking in extremes, I am a worrier and I am paranoid. I'm not some kind of religious fanatic and I don't have anything against the pursuit of knowledge. I know that my life is a worthless blip in time, but all the same, I am rather enjoying it. It's one thing for the Earth to be eventually rendered inhabitable. At least the planet itself would still be there, with potential to eventually recover and start over. But we're talking about erasing the Earth from existence, with nothing left to say that it was ever there. I don't know about you, but the thought of this is too upsetting to comprehend.

I also realise that there are plenty of other, more likely ways for the Earth to be instantly annihilated. What's aggravating me about this case in particular is that it's man-made and being done on purpose just to answer a few scientific questions. When there's even the remotest of chances that this thing could tear the planet apart, it begs the question as to how people are actually being allowed to create and use such a device. The sheer arrogance of mankind never fails to boggle my mind.

I suppose the motto of all this that life is like a box of quarks; you never know when they might turn into strangelets and swallow you whole.
